October 5, 2011 Ateneo Faculty Barkada Gives Back
Russel Que, Fritz Lopez-Motte and, Ann Sayaboc were brought together at the ECCE faculty department, teaching the young batches of engineering students between the years 2002-2005. Despite the sense of fulfillment that the teaching profession gives, they all eventually left to start new adventures. They nevertheless remained very good friends. Russel for one pursued further studies in Germany while Fritz started her family in France and then worked at HP Belgium. Ann also left to work in the industry and eventually went to the Czech Republicand landed a project manager role at DHL. Their distance from the Philippines does not diminish their great sense of affinity especially with the institution that is Ateneo which not only helped nourish their intellectual well being but more so widened their social horizon. Ann was a UP graduate and her example shows that after spending a while in the Ateneo, anyone would easily understand and engender the ideals that constitute an Atenean. As Russel and Fritz were both AASA scholars and Ann was a UP scholar herself, they are all grateful for the generosity of others that enabled them to receive the gift of education. Last 2008, as they read one OAA write-up about their previous student Archie Dolit, they felt the calling to be on the giving end. As young professionals, they're able to support a half-scholarship to AASA and with God's grace would continue exuding the Atenean value of being men and women for others as they participate actively in AASA's outreach. __________________________________________________________________________________ August 12, 2011 Other Ways to Help: Organize a Fund-Raiser for AASA
As you know, the AASA sponsored one (1) matinee show of CARE DIVAS, a musical drama-comedy staged by the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) last June 11, 2011. This was made possible by the kind efforts of Ateneo alumni scholars Gina Oris (BS ’87),Gi Oris (BS ’91, MA ‘05) and Bong Oris (BS ’92, MA ’03).
The Oris sisters presented this opportunity and took the risk of buying the show for AASA and donated the net proceeds to the Scholars-for-Scholars Scholarship Fund. They were also able to get the support of BPI, Globe, Mega Sardines, Tender Juicy Purefoods and Sea Oil as the show’s corporate sponsors.
The Oris sisters, in an effort to raise scholarships for the Ateneo, not only significantly contributed to the fund, they also paid special tribute to our OFWs and showed support for Philippine theater.
The AASA is truly grateful to their magnanimous support and generosity and look forward to working with others who are willing to do the same. If this story inspired you and sparked your interest to do the same, call426-6001 local 5197-99 and look for Sam Fider. __________________________________________________________________________________ August 10, 2011 The Filipino Children’s Library Ateneo scholars are scattered all over the globe. No matter how far they go, they continue to live as men and women for others and remain committed to the virtue of paying it forward. Wilbert and Gladys Galang, Ateneo alumni scholars who graduated in the mid-80s, are a testament to this truth.
The couple has been giving to the scholarship program and has been supporting the initiatives of the AASA for more than a decade now. Also, they founded ‘The Filipino Children's Library’, a non-profit organization that collects and ships children’s books to libraries and schools in the Philippines. If you reside in the U.S. and have books to donate, please email Wilbert Galang at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . As a community, let us pray for Mrs. Anita Cruz, mother of LA Cruz, an Ateneo alumni scholar from batch 1997. LA requested for prayers from the AASA community for the speedy recovery of her mother who was diagnosed with colon cancer and has just completed her 15th chemotherapy. Please read her letter below:
“If it is not too much to ask, I would like to request for prayers for my mother Anita Cruz's complete healing from the AASA Community as she continues her brave battle against cancer. She was diagnosed with colon cancer since 2004 and had surgery but opted for no chemotherapy. Last October 2009 she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had hysterectomy. Last August 2010, she finally agreed to have chemotherapy after a new mass was seen during he routine check-up. After her 9th chemotherapy session 3 weeks ago, we were hoping that the tumor will be gone but was surprised to learn yesterday that the tumor even increased in size.
It has been a tough time for us and for me, being the eldest and breadwinner. Ever since she was diagnosed with cancer last 2004, I have requested mama to retire. I have supported her and my two siblings (my real sister is a special child and my adopted sister now incoming HS senior) since then. Now that I have my own son, I still manage to be a mother, wife, daughter and sister with joy in my heart.
Through God's grace, it has been six challenging but blessed years as we continue our battle with cancer. I was able to provide for all my family's needs and keep my faith, all because of the gift of an Ateneo education and spirituality. I can never thank the Ateneo enough for how it has changed me and my family's life. I will forever be grateful for the generous and kind hearts who helped send me to the Ateneo.
Despite all these trials, I still feel an overflowing love and gratitude. The blessings are too much to be ignored.Again, thank you very much in advance for all your prayers.” – Maria Lourdes Ann Cruz, 1997 BS Legal Management |
